Young Roderick Grant is in the prime of his life when he dies of fever November of 1870.[1] Infection is one of the common causes of a fever and can result in dehydration, confusion, headache, and other symptoms especially if the temperature remains high for a prolonged period of time. A second source lists the cause of death as Typhoid.[2] No matter the cause, this unexpected event is a tremendous loss for the Grant family.
Roderick is identified as a son of Angus and Mary (nee McIntosh) Grant on the death record, but most records identify his mother as Catherine. He was born about 1844 based on inscription and probably named after his paternal grandfather, Rory Grant of Lower South River. As the eldest son he no doubt farmed the land with his father, Angus. Upon the death of his father in 1866, Roderick is listed as farming the land at North Grant in 1868.[3]
