The lower half of Kenneth McPherson’s headstone is missing; therefore, vital information must come from other sources. Kenneth is a relatively uncommon name, so we checked vital statistics. We located a death record for a widowed 75 year old Kenneth McPherson occurring Oct 17, 1873 – the son of John and Mary McPherson.[1] His cause of death is listed as cancer.

Cannot locate a marriage record for Kenneth McPherson, but we do find his family on the 1838 Census.[2] A list of the constituents of the household are listed below – five children plus two adults:

  • No. of Male Children under six years of age | 1
  • No. of Female Children under six years of age | 1
  • No. of Males under fourteen years of age | 2
  • No. of Females under fourteen years of age | N / A
  • No. of Males above fourteen years of age and not heads of Families | N / A
  • No. of Females above fourteen years of age | N / A

The male members of the McPherson household are identified as Neil, John and Alex.[7] Following up with the 1861 census for Sydney County; Polling #4; Abstract #5; Line 10 we find the Kenneth McPherson family featuring three males, five females for a total of eight individuals in the household. The nominal census for 1871 lists names, ages and occupations and are recorded below.[8]

  • McPherson, Kenneth | Age 72 | Occ: Farmer
  • McPherson, Catherine | Age 61
  • McPherson, Margaret | Age 30
  • McPherson, John | Age 28 | Occ: Farmer
  • McPherson, Ann | Age 25
  • McPherson, Eunice | Age 23

Following up with subsequent census we find there are many changes to the McPherson family over the next ten-year period. There are several notable marriages and deaths.

Pioneer Cemetery Heritage Project

It is only in recent years that we have come to the realization that we have neglected our ancestors and the contribution they made to our society. We must tell the story of these courageous men and women in words that will inspire our children to take pride in the mighty accomplishments of their forebears.
